Your Teen Eats Constantly. So Why Are They Still Exhausted?
Amy BiondichYour grocery bill is $400 a week. Your teen ate an entire rotisserie chicken for dinner last night, plus sides. They had two breakfasts this morning. There are three empty cereal boxes in the recycling from the last 48 hours. By any reasonable measure, this kid is not underfed.
And yet somehow, by Wednesday afternoon, they're moving like they're walking through quicksand. Their coach is asking if everything's okay at home. You're starting to wonder if they're staying up all night on their phone or if something else is going on.
Here's what almost no one tells parents until it's been going on for months: eating a lot and eating what your body actually needs are two completely different things. And for a teen athlete whose body is trying to grow and recover from intense training at the same time, the gap between those two things can be wider than you'd think.
The Volume Trap: When More Food Doesn't Mean More Fuel
There's a strange assumption that gets reinforced constantly in youth sports: if an athlete is tired, they must not be eating enough. The solution? Eat more. Bigger portions. More snacks. Another protein shake. And when that doesn't work, the advice escalates: eat even more.
But here's what that advice misses. Your teen's body doesn't just need calories. It needs the raw materials to turn those calories into usable energy, to repair damaged muscle tissue, to regulate sleep, to maintain focus, to keep the immune system from collapsing every other week. Those raw materials are micronutrients: vitamins, minerals, and compounds that don't show up on a calorie tracker but do every bit of the actual work.
Think of it this way. You can pour gallons of gas into a car, but if the spark plugs are fouled, the battery is dying, and the oil hasn't been changed in a year, that car isn't going anywhere. The fuel is there. The machinery that turns fuel into forward motion is not. That's what's happening when your teen athlete eats constantly but still can't make it through a full week of training without hitting a wall.
Where the Volume Comes From (and Why It's Not Enough)
Most teen athletes default to a handful of foods that are easy, cheap, fast, and filling. Nothing wrong with any of those criteria in theory. The problem is that those foods tend to be calorie-dense but micronutrient-poor. And when they make up the bulk of what an athlete eats, the body gets plenty of energy on paper but runs short on the tools it needs to actually use that energy.
The usual suspects:
White bread and bagels. Cereal that's more sugar than grain. Pasta with butter or plain marinara. Frozen pizza. Chicken nuggets. Chips. Crackers. Granola bars that are basically candy with better branding. Fast food that checks the "quick protein" box but not much else.
None of these foods are evil. Plenty of elite athletes eat them. But when they dominate the diet, when they're the foundation rather than the occasional convenience, they create a situation where an athlete can be full, satisfied, and completely under-resourced at the micronutrient level.
Your teen might be eating 3,000 calories a day and still coming up short on magnesium, iron, B vitamins, and vitamin D. The volume is there. The density is not. And density is what matters when you're asking a teenage body to train hard, recover fast, and grow at the same time.
The Utilization Problem: Eating It Doesn't Mean Using It
Here's the piece that catches a lot of families off guard. Let's say your teen is eating a reasonably varied diet. Fruits, vegetables, lean protein, whole grains. On paper, it looks solid. And yet the fatigue persists.
That's because eating a nutrient and actually absorbing and using it are not the same thing. Digestion quality, stress levels, sleep deprivation, training intensity, genetics, and even the specific combination of foods on the plate all affect how efficiently the body can extract and utilize what it's given.
Two athletes can eat the exact same post-practice meal and walk away with completely different outcomes. One athlete's body processes it efficiently, pulling out the magnesium, the B vitamins, the amino acids, and putting them to work. The other athlete's body, for any number of reasons, doesn't. Maybe their gut health is compromised. Maybe chronic stress is interfering with digestion. Maybe they're deficient in a co-factor nutrient that helps the body absorb something else. The result is the same: the food goes in, but the benefit doesn't fully materialize.
This is why the advice to "just eat more" or "just eat healthier" falls flat for so many families. They're already doing that. The issue isn't effort. It's efficiency. And you can't fix an efficiency problem by increasing volume.
What This Actually Looks Like in Real Life
If you've been here for a while, you've probably seen some version of this pattern play out in your own house. Maybe not all of it, but enough that it feels familiar.
They eat a huge dinner and wake up starving. You're feeding them plenty. They're cleaning their plate. And yet every morning it's like they didn't eat at all the night before. Their body burned through what it could use and is still looking for something it didn't get.
They crash between meals, hard. You send them to school with breakfast. They have lunch. But by 2 PM they're texting you asking when they can eat again because they feel shaky, foggy, irritable. That's not normal teenage hunger. That's blood sugar instability, often driven by a lack of the nutrients that help regulate it.
They're tired after eating. You'd think a good meal would give them energy. Instead, they're dragging. This happens when digestion is inefficient or when the body is working harder than it should to process what it's been given. It's a sign that something in the system isn't working smoothly.
The grocery bill keeps climbing but the energy doesn't. You're spending more. They're eating more. And the result is... the same. Still tired on Thursdays. Still sore for three days after a hard practice. Still fading in the second half of games. The math isn't mathing.
Why the Standard Fixes Don't Fix It
This is usually the point where well-meaning advice starts flying. Eat more protein. Drink more water. Take a multivitamin. Cut out sugar. Add more carbs. Try this powder. Try that shake. Most of it is reasonable. Some of it might even help a little. But none of it solves the core problem, which is that you're still guessing.
You're guessing what's low. You're guessing what's being absorbed. You're guessing what your teen's body actually needs versus what the internet says all athletes need. And guessing means you're probably over-supplementing in areas that are fine while completely missing the one or two gaps that are actually holding your athlete back.
The multivitamin approach gives a little of everything, which sounds good until you realize it's giving the same dose to every person regardless of their training load, growth rate, or diet. It's a one-size-fits-all answer to a highly individual problem.
The "eat more protein" approach assumes protein is the limiting factor, which it often isn't. Most teen athletes eating a semi-reasonable diet are getting adequate protein. What they're missing is the micronutrients that help the body actually use that protein to build and repair tissue.
The "try this supplement" approach is just expensive guessing. Maybe it helps. Maybe it does nothing. Maybe you're stacking it on top of something they're already getting enough of and creating an imbalance somewhere else. You won't know unless you test.
What You Can Do Right Now (While You're Deciding What's Next)

Add color to every meal. If the plate is beige, add something green, red, or orange. The more variety in color, the more variety in nutrients. It's a simple visual rule that works surprisingly well.
Rethink what "enough food" means. Instead of asking "are they full?" ask "did they eat something with protein, something with carbs, something with healthy fat, and something with vitamins and minerals?" Fullness and nourishment aren't the same thing.
Get strategic about timing. It's not just what they eat. It's when. Fuel before practice, recover within an hour after practice, and don't let them go more than three to four hours without eating something during the day. Consistency matters.
Stop skipping breakfast, even on early mornings. This is the one that gets sacrificed first when schedules get tight. It's also the one that sets the tone for the entire day. Even a quick, imperfect breakfast is better than nothing.
Those changes won't fix a true nutrient deficiency. But they will create a stronger foundation, and sometimes that's enough to see a small improvement. If it's not, that's when testing starts to make sense.
When Guessing Stops Being Efficient
At some point, continuing to guess becomes more expensive and more frustrating than just finding out what's actually going on. You've tried the snacks. You've adjusted the meals. That's not a failure. That's a signal that the issue is specific, not general, and specific problems need specific answers.
